The definitive In Flames album

Rating: 5/5

Originally released in 1995, The Jester Race was the third album from Swedish death metal band In Flames. If you only know the band from their recent work, you may be surprised to hear what they sounded like back in the 90's, when they played melodic death metal and were regarded as one of the best at it.

I actually enjoy the band's newer albums, but they don't remotely compare to the perfection they unleashed in the few short years between The Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony. Devastating rhythms were paired with Maiden-esque melodies for a completely accessible, but completely heavy brand of death metal. These are melodies that will be running through your head days after you hear the album, and not in an annoying way.

The Jester Race is really the point where what you'd consider the Gothenburg sound was crystallized. The album is just a level beyond where In Flames was at with Lunar Strain (Dig) and Subterranean, in terms of melodies and songwriting as well as the vocals. Anders Friden was one of the best death metal vocalists because he never really had that Cookie Monster sound. It's less brutal than those first two albums, but I still think what the band was doing at this point is legendary.

Even though I prefer Whoracle (it was my first death metal album), The Jester Race really is the definitive In Flames album, and has to be considered the benchmark for melodic death metal (at least post-Slaughter of the Soul). It's a must-have In Flames album, a must-have melodic death metal album, and one that most metal fans really need to own.

Edition Notes: Nuclear Blast reissued The Jester Race in 2002, adding the Black Ash Inheritance EP as bonus tracks and remastering the sound. Other than the very cheap-looking digipack, it's an ideal reissue.

The best album by In Flames

Rating: 5/5

This is the best album by in flames before they went mainstream. RTR really changed the band for the worst although they are still a good band i recommend checking this album out because it was back before they were really popular and had a different sound. some of the best melodies ever written by the band are on this album. best tracks, Goliath Disarm Their Davids, Lord Hypnos, The jesters dance. I recommend you give the full album a good listen because it is great stuff :).

ITS OK

Rating: 3/5

im not really a fan of in flames this cd was ok at best i kinda felt that the songs were a little repetative and never got into it

I did it... in reverse order

Rating: 4/5

Becoming a lover of metal during the reign of KoRn and then turning to other things like Slipknot and later coming back a bit to Shadows Fall, the first album I discovered by In Flames was Come Clarity. It was right down my alley. All I ever read was how much In Flames had lost over the years and how much better the older stuff was. Well, I have all the In Flames now. I got them in reverse order (except for Sense of Purpose which is also good) and came to appreciate their whole catalogue. I am amazed though at how much more melodic guitar work there is on this album. If you are getting this later on after enjoying the new stuff like me, be prepared for the soaring melodic guitar work instead of the low-tuned chugging riffs you're used to.

This album is a great album, its typical In Flames...I do not understand why people bother to rate the music if they don't like it or don't have anything remotely intelligent to say to give insight to the tunes...the album features some great tunes such as Goliath's Disarm your David's, Acoustic Medley, Jesters Race and Dead Eternity...its face paced metal, with the feeling to get you moving...I give it 5 stars due to anyone who like catchy music and is into "scream/growl metal" would like this band
